There are four books to review today, three solid and one not-so-much. The three solid novels I read without cheating and checking the ending, a lovely batch of good reading!
Walter Mosley is my hero. His latest, Known to Evil is really good. I love how he writes, and his select choice of words often makes you stop mid-paragraph to review a sentence just to savor it. Leonid McGill is one of my fav characters, flawed and fascinating. And his kids should be fodder for novels to come. New York City is featured as a minor character. Nice.
Another novel with New York City as a character is Linda Fairstein’s Hell Gate, almost too much so. She has ratcheted up the historical aspect of her novels and it’s getting to be distracting to the plot, not enhancing it. The plots of her last couple of books are a bit too convoluted and unbelievable. And could she just hook up with Mike already?
The third solid tale is Harlan Coben’s Caught. And yep, it’s signed, so I love it just a tad bit more (amazing what an autograph will do!). Just a great tale, well told, believable characters well-sculpted and keeps your attention all the way until the end. It's a bit transparent because I guessed a major plot line early on, but I won’t hold it against Harlan because the book is signed.
And lastly, there is The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris. This book is beautifully written but I couldn’t finish it. And because you love the writing, you feel guilty that the story line just doesn’t interest you. It does make you appreciate the ones that combine all the right elements; well-written, great plot, and lovely characters.
And thanks to Walter, Linda, Harlan and Joshua.
Next up: Kellerman (dad, not son or wife).
