Charlie caught my eye in the furniture store after an alcohol-fueled lunch with my friend Dave Gregory. Goaded-on and always susceptible to dares, I adopted him. His name was Charlie and he was adorable, albeit a bit stiff, and I fell for him. We put the top down on Dave's convertible, lay Charlie in the front seat and took him home to my loft in Jack London Square.

Over the years, Charlie has had an integral role in the household. He's entertained the grand kids, delighted the neighbors and dressed for the holidays. Now, I'm selling my house and the staging expert has recommended we remove Charlie. Is now the time to sell him? Will he go to a good home, where they will love him like I have?

Charlie storied are the best. At the loft, he scared Auntie Da so much that she put a pillowcase over his head for the duration of her stay. Tourists driving by the HMB home are constantly stopping and taking his photo (he always obliges). Gary found a Charlie in NYC, tarnished after being left to he elements. OJ has one. And there's a Charlie outside a tchotckes store in Fisherman's Wharf.
There's more. A law enforcement agent stopped one day in front of my house to tell me that one night, after heavy drinking at a local watering hole, a fellow agent stopped and went to draw his weapon because there was a guy ready to draw on him. The window guy's assistant took his picture with Charlie while working in the house, to share with all his friends on Facebook. When I put my house on the market, my first open house yielded a couple who wanted to know Charlie's story. Others know where I live by the cop in the window. He's the neighborhood protector.

And for the holidays, he is known to dress in the spirit of the holiday or the event. And kids love him (he's very gentle with them).
And then there was the time I actually dated someone who really resembled Charlie! My niece was amazed that I conjured up a real-life Charlie!

And now I have a decision to make. Do I keep Charlie for the next homestead or give him up to a deserving home?
