A Giants Affair to Remember

Before we start the 2010 World Series between our San Francisco Giants and their Texas Rangers, I’d like to share why this Giants team is special and why I’m in love with them.

Let me count the ways!

Pray for Giants move
Giants win WS
1.    I was born in SF 6 months before the Shot Heard ‘Round the World, I was 3 ½ when the Giants last won a World Series, 7 when they came West.  We’re due.

2.    My dad, whose family goes back 5 generations in SF, raised us proper; Love the SF Giants, hate the LA Dodgers.

3.    We listened to games on the radio, I went to games in high school when my boyfriends promised Willie Mays in the nude (not sure where that came from, but it was funny in the 60’s), and we cut business school to grab a game in Candlestick.

4.    My love for the Bay Area produced schizo tendencies in all sports, including the A’s and Giants.  I had one of those ½ Giants, ½ A’s hats for the Bay Bridge Series (not attractive). Mark McGuire lived across the street in 1989 and my only World Series was attended with a ticket from Mac.  All fine and good, but not the Giants, my first love.

5.    When I returned to Bay Area in 2001 and living in Oaktown, it was the A’s.  Moving back to SF in 2002, it was the Giants and I’ve had season tickets almost always since.  I skipped 2009.

Best broadcasters ever!

6.    In October 2009, Kruk and Kuip were the Grand Marshalls of the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival’s parade.  Colors are Orange and Black.  Coincidence or prequel to 2010?

7.    In February 2010, I was invited to attend an event in the Giants locker room.  The Giants had just re-signed Big Money Molina, whom I love, and I was overcome with Giants infatuation.  I signed up for season tickets and the ride of a lifetime!

8.    The affair has bloomed and blossomed all season.  Corresponding with the completion of a longtime Boffo client project, I had the time to devote to my new love.  And it’s been magic inside!

  • Triples Alley pre-game and meeting Will the Thrill.  Smitten!
  • My flip-flops have been on the field five times, even on the mound.  Swoon!
  • Junior Giants and Fiesta de Gigantes, hanging with Jonathan Sanchez and Santana. Heaven!
  • Stalking Timmy, just like high school.  Thrilling!
  • Giants games are great place to hang with friends, the dancing KettleKorn guy, Amy G, or Tony, the Ball Dude
  • Hanging with Venrockers
  • Meeting Buster, Huff, Andres (and Zito, not so much). Adoration!
  • Sanchez and Santana
    Tony the Ball Dude
    Amy G hanging

Timmy, following me

9.  This Giants team is a group of misfits, also-rans, and knuckleheads, basically the Bad News Bears.  There is an absence of humongous egos (except Zito, and look what happened to him?) and a focus on the team.  Trite, maybe, but enticing and loveable.

10.      It’s a positive love affair, one that adds to ones life, not detract.  We like the Padres, we admire the Braves and Bobby, we are ok with the Phillies, we just don’t want to marry them.  We want our Giants to prevail.

11.      We even have our song, Don’t Stop Believing.  Thanks, White Collar Brawlers and Ashkon!

12.    And new clothes to please the team!  The Big Time Timmy Jim shirt is my personal fav.

13.      Like all great affairs, my life has no room for anything but my Giants.  Well, maybe room for Boffo’s new client (who is awesome), but I really need a haircut, to go to the dentist, eye doc, etc.  After the Series.

14.      Truly, I’ve been saying all year that this is our year, the year of our San Francisco Giants.  I will be buying tickets again next year, and will even celebrate a milestone b-day in the Legends Suite next April for 100 of my closest friends and family.  But 2010 is the year we win the first San Francisco Giants World Series.

So, as we scramble for tickets and gear up with new shirts and caps, remember where we started 2010, remember the team we are supporting today, and remember our undying love no matter who will screw up over the next week, for without them we never would have made it this far.

Ahhhh, love is in the air!  Go Giants!
